The North & South Bubbles

For many people, The North and South Bubbles are synonymous with a visit to Jordan Pond in Acadia National Park. They are so prominent on the northern horizon, especially when reflected on the surface of the pond, that they rule the visual terrain. They are instantly recognizable to many and given rise to one or two jokes along the way.

The North Bubble, which is on the left in the photograph shown above, has the highest elevation at 872 feet. The South Bubble follows at 766 feet. The "Bubbles" can also be viewed from Eagle Lake which is north of Jordan Pond in Bar Harbor.

A carriage road on the western side of Jordan Pond (on the left side of the photo) provides spectacular views of the mountains. There is also a hiking path that surrounds the pond as well as a trail that leads to the Bubbles.

You can reach The Bubbles and Jordan Pond via the Park Loop Road. This particular section, located approximately in the lower-right quadrant of Mount Desert Island, allows for two way traffic traveling north or south. (View the Acadia Map.)
