Nestled at the end of a private road behind an 1840's farm house, a beautiful log home called the Whitetail Cottage is ready to provide you with a perfect family getaway. Located on a two-plus acre wooded lot, you and your family will appreciate the setting away from traffic and, at the same time, the convenience of being only about a five minute drive from Acadia National Park. Downtown Bar Harbor, with its many shops and restaurants, is only about a ten minute drive away.
For those who wish to leave the driving to someone else, a free shuttle bus service called the Island Explorer can pick you up at the entrance to the Whitetail Cottage's private road and take you to most all important places on Mount Desert Island including Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.
As you see in the photo to the right, the log home has a very comfortable living space with a lovely stone chimney and wood stove for creating atmosphere and taking the edge off the cool nights that can happen occasionally on the island. To the upper left, you can see part of the loft area that overlooks the living room.
Whitetail Cottage has a fully equipped kitchen with all the needed amenities including a Lobster-Pot for cooking your own Maine Lobster. There is a section of the counter that has stools so that you can easily converse and watch the designated cook of the family.
You will likely be spending most of your time outside while visiting the area. There are many spectacular sights to see including Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliff, Jordan Pond, Cadillac Mountain, and much more. There are also several towns and villages on the island besides Bar Harbor such as Somesville, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, or the nearest commercial center in Ellsworth. Birdwatchers will be delighted with the many places to view birds from such as the Nature Center and the Wild Gardens of Acadia. There is also a really fast, 55 mph ferry service called The Cat that takes two trips a day (certain days of the week) to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
The
photo to the right shows the main dining area next to the large sliding glass doors that open to a large outside deck. You will enjoy the beauty outside and occasional wildlife that may be seen. This view is looking from the kitchen area. You can see that the stone chimney is a centerpiece of the living space. It is absolutely gorgeous in the evening with the fire going in the wood stove. The glow flickers across the walls and exposed wood creating a special and memorable ambiance.
There are two bedrooms plus a loft sleeping area. The second floor master bedroom has a queen sized bed. Bedroom 2 is on the first floor and has a double bed. The smaller loft bedroom has a queen futon. The home sleeps a maximum of six people. There is a full bathroom on the first and second floors.
You will find board books, games, over 60 movies to watch, and for the gaming enthusiast, we have PS2 and XBox with over 20 games.
There are many things to do on Mount Desert Island or off such as sightseeing, kayaking, whale watching, bicycling, rock climbing, bird watching, swimming, hiking, shopping, gallery viewing, sailing, golf, and much more. Consider taking a horse-drawn carriage ride on the famous Carriage Roads that go throughout Acadia National Park. This place has magic to discover!
