Located on Whitetail Lane in the section of Bar Harbor, Maine called Salisbury Cove, Hikers Haven is tucked into the field and woods of an 1840s farm yet, is only four miles from Acadia National Park. The owners provide an excellent map of the Park's carriage roads and hiking trails. If you wish, they will share information regarding their favorite trails and viewpoints. The cottage construction is post and beam timber frame done in traditional hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery with all the beautiful, massive beams left exposed. Just one mile away is Hadley's Point Beach with ample parking and a good place to slip your kayak into the saltwater and explore beautiful Frenchman's Bay and also photograph the amazing sunsets.
A free shuttle bus service called the Island Explorer is available for those who wish to leave the driving to someone else. It can pick you up at the entrance to the cabin's private road and take you to most all important places on Mount Desert Island including Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.
The kitchen is finished with cherry cabinets and Corian™ countertops, ceramic tile floor and all new appliances. It is fully equipped to handle your level of cooking pleasure. The breakfast/dining nook overlooks the “Zen” garden in front to the old pasture land beyond and makes a great spot to watch for wildlife during your morning coffee.
The living area is extremely cozy with it's gas log fireplace, comfy love seat and satellite TV. You are surrounded by oriental touches, exposed hemlock beams joined with ash pegs and watercolors of Mount Desert Island, done by a local artist. To one side is a reading nook complete with bookcase where you can enjoy your afternoon tea and a good book.
There are many spectacular sights to see including Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliff, Jordan Pond, Cadillac Mountain, and much more. There are several towns and villages on the island besides Bar Harbor such as Somesville, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, or the nearest commercial, Ellsworth. Birdwatchers will be delighted with the many places to view birds from such as the Nature Center and the Wild Gardens of Acadia. There is also a famous lighthouse on the island! Originally built in 1858, the Bass Harbor Head Light stands 56 feet above mean high water on rocky cliffs!
Hikers Haven is surrounded by a mix of cedar, spruce, oak and old pasture land. A small “Zen” garden is located in front. Deer move through the front yard on a regular basis and with a little luck you will see mom and her spotted fawns during the Summer months. Our private road name of “Whitetail Lane” originated from the regular sightings.
There are many things to do on Mount Desert Island or off such as sightseeing, kayaking, whale watching, bicycling, rock climbing, bird watching, swimming, hiking, shopping, gallery viewing, sailing, golf, and much more.
