Granite Ledge

Our quiet, newly built summer cabin on the western slopes of Freeman Ridge in Southwest Harbor, Maine at the end of a private road, is the perfect place to enjoy your vacation in Acadia National Park on lovely Mount Desert Island. The cabin has complete privacy, located in a peaceful, forested surroundings. Built on a ledge, the cottage has a tree top view of the woods and there are keyhole glimpses through the tall spruce of Bernard Mountain to the north and Swans Island to the southwest. The tall forest surrounding the cottage give an expansive treehouse feel to a modest cabin with a small footprint. Built to the owner's specifications, the cabin's framing and roof are made from lumber harvested from and milled on the property. All appliances are brand new, floors are finished hardwood, giving a luxurious feel to a rustic experience.

Our custom designed cabin has a well equipped galley kitchen with all new, modern appliances including a refrigerator, gas range, dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster and microwave. The expandable dining table adjacent to the kitchen looks out over the forest toward the western mountains and comfortably seats six or more people. There is a bar with three stools overlooking the kitchen for additional seating.

The cozy living room is heated with an efficient wood stove (we supply the firewood) and two sliding glass doors look out onto a spacious deck and into the treetops rising from the forest floor below.

The deck includes seating and a gas grill for outside summer cooking and entertaining.

Inside there are two bedrooms and a modern bath with hot and cold running water and a full tub and shower. The bathroom also contains a washer and dryer and electric heat for those colder mornings in early June and in September. We supply all the sheets and towels and blankets and pillows. The spacious master bedroom has a queen-sized bed and the second bedroom has two twin beds that may be made up into a king upon request. A crib is also available upon request. The cottage is very comfortable and private for a party of up to four plus an infant. Overflow sleeping for up to two people can be accommodated on our pullout sofa bed in the living area. We will ask you to limit your party to no more than 6 (an exception for a 7th can be made for babies under one year old and still in their cribs) and we do not accept pets.

We provide wireless DSL service so you can check your e-mail and get the news and weather. We have found that most cellphones work from this location and so we do not provide landline telephones. There is no TV.

The privacy and seclusion of 44 Granite Road is ideal for couples, including honeymooners who want complete privacy or for families wanting peaceful, forested surroundings, yet we are conveniently close to locations within Acadia National Park and the ocean. We are about five minutes by car from the center of the village of Southwest Harbor where you will find grocery, hardware and drugstores, an excellent small town library, attractive shops and a number of good restaurants catering to a variety of tastes and styles. Or take the “back way” through the woods on foot (or bicycle) which will take about 10-15 minutes. Bar Harbor is about 25 minutes away by car or 45 minutes on the free, publicly supported Island Explorer Bus Service which leaves from a number of locations in and around the village and covers most of the Island including many of your destinations within Acadia National Park.
