The first recorded settlement on Mount Desert Island was in 1761 in what is today called Somesville at the head of Somes Sound. By 1789, the whole island was known as Mount Desert but, in 1795, the island slit into two towns. The northeastern section was incorporated as Eden on February 23, 1796. In 1918, the name Eden was then changed to the more familiar Bar Harbor.
During the mid-nineteenth century, this area became well known as an almost utopian Eden like location largely because of artists who came here to paint landscapes and returned to the larger cities to the south to sell them. Bar Harbor has long been a place of inspiration and creativity.
Whether you are here for the first time, or are a long time visitor, Acadia National Park is likely where you will spend much of your time. There is so much rugged beauty here that it may seem difficult to think of where to start. It may depend on what time of day or night you begin. The island is large so almost any place you choose will do just fine. You may want to begin at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center, just start traveling along the Park Loop Road where you will come upon Sand Beach, Thunder, Hole, Otter Cliff and others, or head right to the summit of cadillac Mountain for an unforgettable sunrise or sunset. The choices are endless so, enjoy!
